Stars of Luck: The Sons of Thor

The two brightest stars in the constellation we know as the Water Bearer are Sadalmelik (“lucky one of the king”) and Sadalsuud (“luckiest of the lucky”), and when I looked at this constellation, to my surprise the Gods who came forth were Magni and Modi, the two sons of Thor by the giantess Jarnsaxa. Modi’s name means “Wrath’ and Magni’s name means “Mighty”, and when their father is stuck under a giant’s foot, they come out and help him to escape.

Modi’s Star is Sadalmelik and Magni’s is Sadalsuud, which was even referred to as “Mighty Destiny” by the Babylonians. Both indicate luck and good fortune. Bernadette Brady says that Modi’s Star makes its own luck, where Magni’s star dips into a cosmic stream of luck.
